KEY FEATURES OF THE WILDERNESS ODYSSEY PROGRAM
Wilderness Odyssey will provide a breadth of therapeutic and family services to its participants. The following is a list of key services that Wilderness Odyssey will offer families but is not inclusive of all components of the program. All participants of Wilderness Odyssey will have:
Safe Adventure Activities
Each participant in the program will learn backcountry camping and hiking, primitive camping skills, navigation skills, rafting or canoeing and rock climbing or rappelling. Youth will also be trained and receive their wilderness first aid.
Clinical Assessment
As part of the intake process, every student receives a strengths-based psychosocial assessment, a physical exam, a substance abuse assessment, and a strengths-based family assessment. This information is integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan designed to support students’ and family’s growth and development.
Individualized Treatment Planning
The treatment team is led by the child’s primary therapist. Other team members include the family, child, director, field guides, and other support staff. Both family and child are vital, active members in the treatment planning process. The individualized treatment plan includes both short-term objectives and long-term goals, addressing both challenges and strengths.
On-going Clinical Services for Students
Students have a primary therapist with whom they meet on a weekly basis for individual and group therapy sessions. Group sessions focus on a range of therapeutic topics and individual sessions focus on the student’s individualized treatment plan.
On-going Clinical Services for Families
Weekly phone calls between parents and therapist provide on-going support and updates on student progress. Phone calls also provide time to review the progress made on the family assignments.
Web Support
Weekly progress reports, letters and pictures will be emailed to you.
Treatment Planning and Coordination with Other Professionals
Therapists schedule regular phone updates with educational consultants, home therapists, and prospective aftercare services.
Aftercare Planning
Research shows that aftercare planning and implementation are the strongest indicators of a child’s continued success. The treatment team will be in contact with educational consultants, home therapists, residential programs, therapeutic boarding schools, and other related professionals on a continuous basis to support your child’s continued success.
Family Workshops
At the end of the student’s program, the family returns for a Family Reunion Workshop, which includes family education, family therapy, camping under the stars with your child, celebrating successes, and preparing for the transition out.
Optional Clinical Services
Youth Odyssey arranges additional clinical services as elected by families, including complete psychological testing, psychiatric services, follow-up services, and specialized family workshops. |
